Highlights of Project: Design Boot Camp

At the summer sessions, our participants were able to explore what goes into the process of design concepts to completion garments. With each experience the students gained a pride of accomplishment as shown in their completed projects. Make plans to explore design camps next summer. Couture Inspiration in NYC

IDTSD creative director spent the past week in New York, while there, she had the opportunity to view the Alexander McQueen “Savage Beauty” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Words cannot describe the experience to study up-close the meticulous couture details and exquisite tailoring of the brilliant McQueen. McQueen as one of fashion’s most influential, imaginative and inspiring designers in his short 19 year career. He challenged and expanded our understanding of clothing beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics and identity. Sadly, McQueen died in 2010.

While in NYC for continuing education, trend focus sessions and attending international textile markets, she also had the opportunity to renew her acquaintance with mentor Tim Gunn, during the final filming of Project Runway. While there, elimination was taking place to select the final designers that will come back with their collections to show at Fashion Week in September. Be sure to view the season opener of Project Runway on July 28^th to watch what happens!

While working on her course work for master tailor credentials, Ms. Kealey had the honor of meeting Mr. Russell Kashket, official Master Tailor for to the royals. Mr. Kashket brought examples of his recent work he designed and created for HRH Prince William, HRH Prince Harry, and other uniforms for the males and page boys at the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. Ironically, Kate Middleton’s wedding dress was created by Sarah Burton, creative director at Alexander McQueen.

This week’s Fashion Illustration class made a visit to the Washington Pavilion to view the Andy Warhol exhibit. The students were inspired by the use of color in the Warhol collection. This was perfect timing as they are illustrating colorful textiles into fashion.

FORM + FASHION MEETS FUNCTION

Guests attending our year end annual event were greeted with a live mannequin displaying our theme, FORM + FASHION MEETS FUNCTION, thanks to our friends at Ethan Allen. All of our exceptional photography for our marketing poster and event was captured by the talented Christopher Reistroffer.

The Institute of Design & Technology of SD showcased their graduating interior students' portfolio designs and fashion students' runway event at the Museum of Visual Materials. Thanks to the support of many friends, family, and donors, the event was well attended and a great time was had by all.

Our students had the opportunity to attend the Museum of Modern Art in New York; as an annual tradition, we bring in a traveling exhibit of the student's favorite work as viewed while attending the MoMa. Van Gogh won the popular vote this year. Each fashion student as well as the interior students were required to create something inspired by one of Van Gogh's pieces. Thanks to Teacher's Discovery, we secured a 17' wide reproduction of Van Gogh's Starry, Starry Night as well as two other pieces from the collection.

The event provieded an opportunity to display the work of several of our 2011-2012 Scholarship recipients. Those in attendence were (from left to right) Linda Tlustos, Kelli Harrington, Kate Warkenthien, and Katy Morris. IDTSD has Project: Design Scholarships available to high school seniors and non-traditional graduates with a passion for design.

Scholarship application ends in June.

Selections for the runway show featured our fashion students' work as well as seating created by our interior students. The interest in design careers is greater than ever. The Institute of Design & Technology of SD has been preparing traditional and non-traditional students for entreprenuerial design professions. They provide an affordable career development in areas where geographical obstacles once made it impossible for those living in our region.

Institute of Design & Technology of SD

The Institute of Design & Technology of SD Interior Décor Program has been approved as educational program in preparation for the C.I.D. (Certified Interior Decorators International) Entrance Exam when applying for Professional Membership.

The interest in design careers is greater than ever. At the Institute of Design & Technology of SD, they have been preparing traditional and non-traditional students for entrepreneurial design professions. IDTSD provides affordable career development in areas where geographical obstacles once made it impossible for those living in our region.

This past year, the Institute was honored with a Governor's Economic Development Award for their vision of educating and development of careers for creative individuals in our state.

IDTSD will be show casing their graduating interior students’ portfolio design show and fashion student’s runway showcase for graduation at the Museum of Visual Materials on Thursday, May 26. They will also be displaying the work of the recipients of their 2011-2012 Scholarship awards.

The Institute of Design & Technology has Project: Design Scholarships available to high school seniors and non-traditional graduates with a passion for design are encouraged to submit an entry. A total up to $10,000 will be available for scholarships for the 2011-2012 year in their Interior and Fashion Design programs. Scholarship application ends in May.

Interior Design Market Tours

Late March and Mid April were great months for travel to design markets. Our group took a spring break to attend the IMS - International Design Square in Minneapolis. Everyone had a great experience and returned with full bags of samples to create their final design projects. At the Architectural Digest Show in New York, Vickie and Anita had the honor of meeting Vicente Wolf at the release of his newest design publication. Along with the AD show, we had a full schedule market visits at both the A & D (Architect & Designer) Building and the D & D (Designer & Decorator) Building in New York City.

Fashion Design Students visit the Big Apple

The cold and wind of South Dakota followed us to our recent design trip to New York City. Our students purchased materials at many of the favorite fabric and trims suppliers in the garment district.

While in the big apple we were also welcomed with the same snow that was dumping on everyone back home. A nice brisk walk down to Central Park was a picturesque view of the snow covered trees. We enjoyed a beautiful view of the city from the “Top of the Rock”.

We even fit in a visit to a live taping of the Martha Stewart show.

Back home, the warmth of hand-crafted wood flooring at Maschino Wood Floor Showroom was a treat on a wicked cold day in South Dakota. Thank you Jeff Maschino for his insight and tour of the floor options of many wood species. In December, we toured the Showplace Wood Products plant and showroom. Much thanks to Paul Sova for his hospitality and educational tour of their facilities in Harrisburg.

We are in the process of expanding to new facilities on second floor and have limited access to our phones and e-mail during the week of December 27th. Holiday Giving Project

In the spirit of holiday giving, our Fashion Design students designed and created corduroy dresses to be given to a local service for distribution. The dresses will be worn by children who otherwise may not have that special Christmas dress. Our students enjoy giving back to the community and this is just one of the many projects they have shared!

Interior Staging

This morning the Interior Decor & Staging students put into practice what they have learned about the principles and elements of design and staging a space. They gave the windows of the school a fresh holiday look. With a few supplies to start with and endless creativity, their ideas came together excellently. They successfully worked as a team and each added their input and imagination.

They were to create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing holiday window display that combined a few of their completed projects as well as the Fashion Design students' work.

Portland Fashion Week 2010

For every fashionista comes the dream of having their pieces being viewed on a national runway with press, buyers, and fashion gurus. This past week, for IDTSD students, this was a dream come true. IDTSD's Creative Director was asked to present her line at Portland's Sustainable Fashion Week. Students were not only invited to experience the trip, but also to be a part of the show.

Students were able to see how a line is created first hand from the sketches and specifications to the material selections and cost sheets. They were amazed as they saw all the details that go into planning a show. Our creative director gave the students the basic concepts and then they brainstormed on accessories and how to tie all the pieces together using color and structure. Some of the student pieces were shown on the runway while others were shown in photos for the website. Several students were able to do hands-on work on garments.

On Saturday night the students were able to attend the night of "Project Runway" shows. They were captivated by the ingenuity and creativity of these designers.

On the final night the students were able to experience the back stage process and all that is a part of a runway show. They were able to experience first hand the hustle and bustle of fittings, dressing, and accessorizing the models. It was a completely different experience after first seeing how smoothly the show runs, and then to see how it is put together. This was a lifetime experience for the students as they saw first handedly all of the ins and outs of how real life situations occur. The students' work was under the Creative Director's sustainable couture line "Lenzanita."

Decor Inspiration

This past week, IDTSD's Decor and Staging students explored ways to help their client expand their budgets with our current economics. They were introduced to various and fun ideas to create a high impact "designer touch" on a tighter budget. The students were amazed at the possibilities out there. Many of these ideas also included eco-decorating and upcycling items you already have. With creativity, brainstorming, and some hands-on time, it's amazing what little touches can add to a space. The world of blogging is full of creative enthusiasts that share their ideas with friends and fellow bloggers and offer inspiration. *Design Sponge* is a site that offers an array of creative inspiration and goodies. 2nd Annual Sioux Falls Greenival

This year Sioux Falls, SD is happy to host it's second annual Greenival and Bio Blitz. The event is this Saturday, September 25 from 10 am until 2 pm. The event will be located at Sertoma Park and the Outdoor Campus.Visit booths from local green-minded businesses, scientists, organizations, and citizens. Bike or take the bus to the event, and get a free sustainable gift!

The scholarship competition asked them to explain their goals and expectations for the upcoming school year as well as express their creativity according to their chosen program of study. They exceeded their expectations and the scholarship advisory committee was fully impressed. Local Sidewalk Arts Festival

Downtown Sioux Falls is privileged to hold the Sidewalk Arts Festival every year. This year the show is on Saturday, September 11, 2010 from 9 am to 5 pm. Visit over 250 local art, craft, and food vendors. Areas also available for kids to express their creativity and have fun throughout the day. Come downtown to support and see local artists and designers.

Summer Camp Success

Summer has flown by, but not without a great couple of months of Project: Design Boot Camp. Each week, the work studios and sewing labs were filled with laughter as students learned new techniques and expanded their knowledge in creative careers. With a revamp in the class lineup this year, students were more knowledgeable and prepared for their advanced camps. This summer, we had students travel in from as far as Oklahoma and Wyoming, as well as those that only had to walk a few blocks to our studios each morning. It was great to have a full class of students eager to soak up creativity and explore different careers every week.

Basics of Sewing and Fashion Illustration were popular classes this year as students were able to learn the fundamentals and create a solid foundation for their creative futures. They learned various hands-on techniques and went home with not only knowlege but also their created projects.

Fashion Design I is popular with the more experienced students as this class allows them more freedom to design and create what they envision. They are able to see how their ideas turn into reality throughout the entire week as they apply their basic fundamental skills and then add more details and new skills.

The new Interior Decor camp turned out to be a success. Students were introduced to interiors and the vast careers that are involved. They were able to let their imaginations fly as they came up with a plan to redecorate their rooms. Hands-on days allowed them to create home accessories and dabble with how architects and designers draft blueprints.

Another new class this summer was the Sustainable Accessories Camp. Students were given the freedom to let their creativity soar as instructors helped their ideas come to life. Some of the materials used to create accessories were: inner tubes from motorcycles, recycled gift cards collected from local stores, zippers, and magazines.

It was another successful summer of creativity, exploration, and imagination. Be sure to watch for the 2011 Project: Design Boot Camp schedule.
